The midnight screening is a small act of rebellion. You should be asleep. Instead you are in a dark room with a few dozen strangers who have made the same unreasonable choice, waiting for a film you have probably seen before.

Midnight audiences are the best audiences. They clap at the opening credits. They know the lines. They stay for the end titles, and they talk about the film all the way to the night bus.

This month, our favourite small cinema runs a night of three cult films for the price of one ticket, with coffee at the interval and croissants at dawn. Bring a friend who has never seen any of them.
