Ten films for the first cold evenings

Long nights, slow stories and a few comedies, chosen by the editors for the start of autumn.

The first cold evenings call for a particular kind of film: long enough to settle into, warm enough to forget the rain against the window. We asked the editors for their choices and argued about them for a week.

The list mixes classics and recent releases, a few long dramas and three comedies, because autumn needs those too. Several are showing this month in repertory cinemas; the rest are worth hunting down.

Our only rule: watch them in the dark, without your phone, preferably with someone who will want to talk about them afterwards.
